The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is a multilateral development bank, with the main mission to help businesses and economies thrive through financial investments, business services and involvement in high-level policy reform, promoting entrepreneurship and resilience. The EBRD operates in 38 countries of operation, helping them to transition to market economies through investing around €10billion a year. The EBRD has extended its focus through the Star Venture Programme with the aim to identify high-potential start-ups and to mobilize globally sourced expertise to help these young firms scale up rapidly. Currently, the programme operates in 22 countries across the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean (SEMED), the Western Balkans region, Eastern and Central Europe, and Central Asia.
